Some Q&A's for parents, guardians and youth

How do I register?
For registration documentation, we have a form that gets filled out at the youth centre but we do require some sort of verbal committment either via email/phone or in person before that. There are no costs to our programs unless stated, we fund raise through various grants and donations to pay for mentors and other program costs etc.
What is age range
We typically cater to high school youth, 13-18 but in order to get a new batch of youth we are promoting the gr 7/8 group and hosting special evenings for the guys and girls. Older youth are encouraged to volunteer their skills as mentors or help with outreach.
What is Batik Art?
It is a textile art that involves a specialized method of applying dye to fabric, usually cotton or silk.  There are about 3,000 recorded batik patterns, some of which include flowers, plants, birds, animals, insects, and geometric forms are all popular motifs.  The use of computers in developing batik designs promises to add many more new and exciting designs to this library.

If your youth is interested in the Batik as of this morning, I received a phone call from our mentor. He has been called away to tend to a family emergency unfortunately but is willing to reschedule for May 10,11,12. TBC

What else is done in the Art Foundations?
Typically all aspects of art are workshopped depending on mentors/volunteers. From Cedar plank carving, beading, painting to film making, photography and photoshop.
If they are interested in the photography - we'll be using film cameras not digital so if they have access to an SLR film camea that would be ideal since they will likely be sharing. Our themes will be "I remember" and "dirt" which will be further discussed during the workshop.
Currently other Art foundation workshops may include painting and possibly print making however our mentor is not yet confirmed.

Cooking Challenge with Chef Rick:
Our chef volunteer is challenging youth - what is the hardest meal to make? he says "Lets make it." Chicken cordon bleu? stuffed portebello mushrooms? maybe something exotic... you decide!

What is Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
This is our elder/mentor/youth social dinner. Youth come after school to help prepare and serve meal to our special guests and then participate in activities/discussion related to that guest. Our last dinners guest was independent producer/CHBC correspondent Tracey Kim Bonneau. She shared her latest film, a made for PBS documentary titled "How can we keep from Singing" A beautiful look into the hard working pioneering women that helped shape our world today. Our next guest is author/ geneologist Shirley Louis. She will be discussing family lineage and inspiring us to start a family tree project.
